The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) was established in 1976 by the Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA). ICSA itself was established by the government of the old Northern Region of Nigeria to provide educational and social services to the people of the region. The first Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) was held in 1977 for all students who had undergone the IJMBE post secondary education program in the existing schools of Basic/ Preliminary studies which had replaced the HSCE.

Presently IJMB now serve as an Advanced Level Examination which guarantee candidate admission into 200level. The Board is administered by the Institute of Education of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. Interim Joint MAtriculation Board Examination IJMBE is an advanced level examination moderated by Ahmadu Bello University, partnering Tertiary Instituions and gvernment agencies. The Examination normally comes up between the months of Febuary and March every year. The examination is based on the approved IJMB syllabus which was structured by the syllabus of the 100 level curriculum of Nigerian Universities.


Thousands of applicants register for IJMB every year, and about 70% of them gain admission into 200L in their preferred university through IJMB. It was set up so as to cater for candidates who couldn’t gain admission into their preferred institution for one reason or the other or for those who need another alternative to University admission as the programme only requires your O’ level Result (Awaiting Result Candidates Can Also Apply).

The prospective candidates would receive lectures at their respective accredited study centers over a period of 9 to 10 months after which they will sit for their final examination which will last for about 2 to 3 weeks.

IJMB certificate is recognized and accepted to more than 70% of Nigeria’s Federal, State and Private Universities. Prospective candidates can also check the JAMB brochure to check IJMB’s legibility.


  • IJMB Certificate does not expire hence in can be used repeated for securing direct entry admission into any University of your choice.
  • JAMB’S UTME is NOT a requirement for registration, so your UTME score does not hinder you from registering for IJMB.
  • You have a higher chance of gaining admission into the University as the population of candidates pressing for direct entry admission is low.
  • Fees can be paid in two to three installments.
